"A huge deal from Al-Nassr could see Cristiano Ronaldo land £350 million over the course of two seasons, while Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes is attracting interest from Real Madrid. Elsewhere, Barcelona hope that Lionel Messi will return from Paris Saint-Germain, and Aston Villa could be able to persuade Roma to sell them their England striker Tammy Abraham."
Cristiano Ronaldo will 'become the highest-earner in sport with a MAMMOTH £173m-a-year deal with Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr', dwarfing long-term rival Lionel Messi's £103.4m in second place and overtaking LeBron James... but who else makes the top 10?
If he does complete the move, Ronaldo's eye-watering salary would make him the highest-earning person in sport, according to Forbes.
In light of the Ronaldo news, Sportsmail looks at the top 10 highest-earners in all sport assuming the Portuguese superstar does move to Saudi Arabia.
We have followed the official 'Forbes Highest-Paid Athletes 2022 List', meaning there is no place for Kylian Mbappe.
However, after signing a bumper new PSG deal in May, the Frenchman is set to earn £107m-per-year so it is expected that he will feature in the list for 2023. The 37-year-old had his Manchester United contract terminated earlier this month, following a tumultuous relationship with club chiefs that only worsened when he made a number of controversial statements in a TV interview with Piers Morgan.
And now Ronaldo is said to have agreed a two-and-a-half year deal with Al Nassr - worth an eye-watering £173m-per-year - that will see him play until the age of 40, according to Spanish newspaper outlet Marca.

world Cup live scores, updates: Uruguay, South Korea tie; Ronaldo, Neymar in action later.
With two days of upsets in a row, can Portugal or Serbia make it three?
A Thanksgiving World Cup slate of matches continues, includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suarez and Neymar coming to the table.
Switzerland took down Cameroon 1-0 to kick things off this morning. Up next is Suarez and Uruguay taking on Son Heung-min and South Korea. The parade of matches continues with Ronaldo — in likely his last world cup — and Portugal facing Ghana. Will he use his performance for Portugal as an audition for a new club?
Finally, champion-favorite Brazil, and its nine forwards, start its World Cup campaign against Serbia in Group G.

Switzerland's Breel Embolo refuses to celebrate goal vs. Cameroon, his birth nation
Switzerland striker Breel Embolo was full of emotion after his winning goal against Cameroon, for a variety of reasons.
Scoring any goal at a World Cup is a milestone but for Embolo, Thursday’s strike in the 48th minute of an eventual 1-0 win went much deeper.
Embolo was born in Cameroon’s capital Yaoundé and moved to France at age five, before settling in Switzerland shortly afterwards. The Monaco striker has referred to himself as Cameroon’s biggest fan.
Embolo got on the end of a Xherdan Shaqiri cross and powered home a finish from close range, before raising his arms in a muted, if not apologetic celebration.

World Cup live updates: Japan leads Germany 2-1; Morocco holds off Croatia in scoreless draw
Saudi Arabia shocked the world Tuesday, beating Lionel Messi and Argentina 2-1 in Group C of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Could another upset be brewing?
Returning to the World Cup for the first time in 36 years, Canada's first task is a tall one against the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Belgium. Croatia, the runners-up from the 2018 World Cup, drew Morocco in a scoreless final tally. Germany vs. Japan and Spain vs. Costa Rica round out the middle of Day 4.
Germany vs. Japan starting lineups
A four-time World Cup champion, Germany is looking to avenge their early group stage exit in 2018. The Germans start their 2022 campaign against Japan, which is making its seventh consecutive World Cup appearance.
Japan is plenty familiar with Germany, four of their starters play in the top tier of the German Bundesliga. While there is an injection of youth on the Japanese side, defender Yuto Nagatomo stands out. He is making his fourth World Cup appearance. The 36-year-old has four goals in his 138 appearances for Japan.

Favorites, underdogs, group stage winners
Ageing Croatia might not be a dark horse
Every single tournament they seem to exceed expectations but the runners up from the 2018 tournament finally seem to be over the hill. Modric (37), Perisic (33) and Lovren (33) are the heartbeat of this team but Croatia looked their age against Morocco and they couldn’t handle the high-pressing of their opponents. Croatia can still out of the group and then who knows? Their experience in tournaments will hold them in good stead but just like at EURO 2020 they don’t seem to be able to match the intensity of most of their opponents. Their quality remains but can they get their best players in the right positions to make the most of it?
Stars of the show
Achraf Hakimi: Showed his class surging forward from right back and was a threat whenever Morocco countered.
Josko Gvardiol: So calm on the ball and dominant defensively. Hard to believe the center back is just 20 years old.

Morocco has the capability to surprise, having lost just once since March (a misleading 3-0 defeat to the USMNT in Cincinnati). Wins over Chile and Ghana this year preceded a Thursday 3-0 defeat of Georgia. The Atlas Lions can prove tough to break down with Romain Saiss, Noussair Mazraoui, and Achraf Hakimi in their ranks.

Saudi Arabia stun Messi, Argentina a very big massive upset in world cup,As Poland, Denmark, mexico, Tunisia made a world cup disappoinment with draws
At various points during qualifying, Tata found himself under plenty of pressure as many fans doubted he would still be in charge if/when Mexico took the field in Qatar. Here’s the positive spin on Mexico’s recent World Cup appearances: seven straight tournaments, seven straight times they advanced from the group stage. Now, here’s the negative spin: seven straight eliminations in the round of 16; zero quarterfinal appearances; 0-for-7 after losing to Brazil in 2018. Alexis Vega could be the next Mexican star to make the jump to Europe, and potentially the Premier League, with a strong showing at the World Cup. A number of European clubs, including fellow Mexico star Raul Jimenez’s Wolves, are reportedly interested in the 24-year-old Guadalajara winger.
As for Poland, 2022 will be back-to-back World Cup appearances, on the heels of missing back-to-back tournaments in 2010 and 2014. They were eliminated from the group after two games in 2018, before winning in their farewell appearance on matchday 3. For many of the stars the world has become so familiar with in recent years, this will be their last hurrah, as Lewandowski (34), Kamil Glik (34), Kamil Grosicki (34), Grzegorz Krychowiak (32) approach the finish line internationally. Between them, 414 caps’ worth of experience at a very high level. Poland haven’t been to the knockout rounds of the World Cup since 1986 in, coincidentally, Mexico.

Argentina was stun by Saudi Arabia
The staggering loss for Lionel Messi and Argentina against Saudi Arabia at the World Cup is right up there with the biggest upsets in tournament history.
Messi, who had given Argentina the lead before the Saudis came back to win 2-1, is playing at what likely is his last World Cup and chasing the one major title that's eluded him.
Messi and his highly-rated team, one of the favorites in Qatar, now have an unwanted place on a very different list after losing to a team ranked 48 places below them. Saudi Arabia had won only three games previously at the World Cup, and only one in the last 28 years before Tuesday's shocker over the two-time champions.
Here is a look at some of the other major World Cup surprises through the years:

U.s draws it's world cup opener after Wales makes a late kick penality
Gareth Bale converted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to offset Tim Weah’s first-half goal and give Wales a 1-1 draw against the United States on Monday in the return to the World Cup for both nations.
Weah, a son of former FIFA Player of the Year and current Liberian President George Weah, scored after a pass from Christian Pulisic in the 36th minute.
Back in the World Cup after missing the 2018 tournament, the United States appeared headed to victory. But Walker Zimmerman plowed down Bale from behind with the Welsh star’s back to the goal, and referee Abdulrahman Al-Jassim of host Qatar pointed to the penalty spot.
Bale put his kick to the left of goalkeeper Matt Turner’s outstretched arm for his 41st goal in 109 international appearances, salvaging a point for Wales in its first World Cup match since 1958.
“The most important thing was that we didn’t lose,” Weah said. “We kept a tie, and now we just focus on the next game.”
Next up for the United States is a high-profile matchup against England on Friday, the same day Wales faces Iran. England opened with a 6-2 rout of the Iranians earlier Monday.
Tim Weah, just 22, was part of a new-look American team that is the second-youngest in the tournament.
“It was a hard fought game. We left everything out there,” United States coach Gregg Berhalter said.
Pulisic, the top American player and one of the few holdovers from the 2017 qualifying failure, burst up the middle of the field in a move that led to the goal. Weah timed his run perfectly as Pulisic passed ahead, breaking in ahead of Neco Williams.
From near the penalty area, Weah used the side of his right foot to poke the ball over the left thigh of sliding goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey for his fourth goal in 26 international appearances.
England crushes Iran with a half-time three goals as the full-time ends in 6: 2
England is on the board in Qatar.
The first match of Day 2 of the 2022 World Cup is off to being a complete rout. England has already scored three first-half goals in their Group B clash.
It all started with Jude Bellingham, the youngest player on England’s World Cup roster at 19 years old, who turned in Luke Shaw’s cross for his first-ever goal for England.
It was then followed up in the 43rd minute with a goal by Bukaya Sake (21) who is also making a World Cup debut.
Then came the final first-half nail with Raheem Sterling scoring a third goal for England.
Iran suffered an early setback after their first-choice goalkeeper, Alireza Beiranvard, had to be stretchered off after a collision with a teammate.
England has high expectations for their World Cup journey after finishing fourth at the 2018 World Cup and second at Euro 2020. And if they continue to play like their first-half showing then the sky is the limit.

world cup: Qatar vs Ecuador, how to watch live
The 2022 World Cup is upon us.
The tournament kicks off on Sunday with hosts Qatar against Ecuador. That's the only game of the day ahead of three games on Monday with the opening round of Group A concluding and the first two matches in Group B.
Qatar, on paper, is a mishmash of naturalized foreigners and nondescript veterans who comprise the worst of the 32 teams at their own tournament. But at the 2019 Asian Cup and as guests at the 2021 Gold Cup, they punched above their weight. So, will they get embarrassed? Or will years of Qatari government investment in soccer — much of it to ensure they don’t get embarrassed — pay off?
Qatar’s big moment is here. We wouldn’t be totally surprised if Qatar was buoyed by adrenaline and won the first game of this World Cup. But we’ve got our eye on the over/under. The total is extremely low for good reason. And we like it to go under at +140. Ecuador’s last three games have finished at 0-0 and you have to go back seven games to find an Ecuador match that had more than one goal

I was excited to the Spain's bold youngster at world cup : said by Cesar Azpilicueta
Experienced Spain defender Cesar Azpilicueta said Saturday he was excited by the squad's "bold" youngsters as La Roja set their sights on a second World Cup crown.
Luis Enrique has selected numerous young stars in his squad, including 20-year-olds Ansu Fati, Nico Williams and Yeremy Pino as well as teenagers Gavi and Pedri.
The 33-year-old Chelsea captain, one of the few veterans in Qatar with Spain, said he enjoys watching them play and is impressed by how rapidly they have adapted to top-level football.
"What surprised me most is their boldness, they're not afraid -- the way they fit into the game, it's a pleasure to see this readiness for the age that they have," Azpilicueta said on Saturday.
"In football the youngsters start earlier and earlier. They are mature, they understand the game and they are showing it. Some of them have played in the Euros already, in the Nations League. At 18 years old they are at a World Cup."
Another youngster linking up with the squad is 19-year-old Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde, who will land in Doha on Saturday afternoon to replace injured left-back Jose Gaya.
Azpilicueta, who made his Spain debut in 2013 under World Cup-winning manager Vicente del Bosque in a friendly in Doha, believes Balde is ready for the tournament despite being uncapped.
"We offer our support to Jose," he said. "Yesterday was a sad day for all of us and now we will try and give our all for him, because he’s a big loss on and off the pitch.
"Now a great team-mate is coming, he's shown his quality with Barca, and with the under-21 side, he’s physical, is very fast and the group will welcome him from the first minute."
The 2010 World Cup winners trained on Saturday under Luis Enrique's watchful eye, with Marco Asensio returning after missing the Friday session.
Azpilicueta hopes to be able to make more of an impact for Spain in his third World Cup, after failing to get off the bench in Russia four years ago.
"While it's true I haven't had consistent game time, I've never been able to play at the level I have with Chelsea in the national team," added the right-back.
"You have to be self-critical and realistic, and for that reason I've had a little thorn in my side."

Ramsdale pinching himself after being selected as the world cup squad
England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is pinching himself after making a rags-to-riches rise from lower league obscurity to the World Cup.
Just three years ago, Ramsdale was an anonymous youngster for whom a World Cup place would have seemed an impossible dream after his parent club Sheffield United sent him on loan to AFC Wimbledon.
The 24-year-old, now thriving with Premier League leaders Arsenal, had already spent time on loan in 2018 with Chesterfield, who were relegated from the fourth tier during his spell there.
Even when Ramsdale finally made it to the Premier League with Bournemouth and then Sheffield United, he suffered successive relegations with those clubs.
But the unglamourous, turbulent beginning to Ramsdale's career served as a valuable learning curve, giving him time to hone his craft out of the spotlight.
Now he is reaping the rewards after starring for Arsenal during their unexpected climb to the top of the Premier League this season.
While Jordan Pickford is expected to be England's number one when Garth Southgate's side start their World Cup campaign against Iran on Monday, Ramsdale has forced his way into the conversation.
The goalkeeper is down to earth enough to realise the odds he has defied to make it to Qatar.
"There's times when it is a pinch-yourself moment when I speak to my parents or my wife, especially after the first few years of my career in difficult situations," Ramsdale said at England's training base in Qatar on Friday.
"I've learnt so much in terms of different experiences. I'm now learning the side of the game being top of the table, being in Europe, being in the England squad.
"But those tough moments when certain people have a different outlook, I've been able to see from the other side."
Ramsdale's road to Qatar came after he watched as a fan during England's run to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.
The England Defender Conor Coady: World cup heat no stress for England
England defender Conor Coady said Gareth Southgate's team would "embrace" the sweltering conditions in Qatar as they prepare for their World Cup opener against Iran on Monday.
Temperatures in Doha have been well over 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) this week -- dramatically different from the chilly autumn weather in Europe that the players have just left behind.
The 29-year-old centre-back, speaking after a training session at the team's Al Wakrah base near Doha, admitted the punishing heat was a challenge.
"It was hard this morning," he said. "It was a long session. It was something we needed as a team to get used to, to feel it, to understand it and it's tough."
"It's a World Cup, no matter when it is in the time of the year," he added. "It's in the winter now and we're here in 30-degree heat but we want to enjoy it as much as we can.
"Going out there and over-thinking the heat or thinking it's too hot will get us nowhere so we're going out there to embrace it."
Coady, who has won 10 caps for England, said the players were confident they would do well in Qatar despite a patchy record since reaching the final of last year's delayed Euro 2020, which included relegation from the top tier of the Nations League.
We know as a team how we want to play, how we want to defend, what we want to do, and the defensive record over the last few years has been absolutely fantastic in terms of how we try to go about it so it's important we keep on focusing on ourselves... we'll be going into the tournament full of confidence."

Cristiano Ronaldo deliver's scathing criticism of united interview
Hours before Cristiano Ronaldo's highly anticipated tell-all interview with Piers Morgan was finally broadcast, Manchester United was pulling down a giant mural outside Old Trafford containing an image of the Portugal superstar.
Surely they knew what was coming.
Few at United were spared in a scathing condemnation of the club that Ronaldo delivered in the first part of a 90-minute interview that went out on TalkTV on Wednesday.
Past and present teammates. Former managers. The people who run the club. They all got a blast from the one of the world's biggest sporting superstars, whose days at United are now surely numbered.
Excerpts from the interview had already been released on Sunday, including clips where Ronaldo said he felt ''betrayed'' by United and that he didn't respect manager Erik ten Hag.
Here are some of the other key parts of the incendiary interview, broadcast four days before the World Cup - likely Ronaldo's last - starts in Qatar:

The English football EPL to have independent regulator for five years
The law maker behind a review of English football governance forecast Tuesday there would be an independent regulator "in five years" time and insisted the Premier League would remain profitable under a new regime.
Next week marks one-year since the release of a report by an independent fan-led review, established following the failed European Super League project, which called for a dramatic shake-up in the way the English game is run.
In April, the British government gave its support to the review's 10 key recommendations, including its centrepiece -- the planned introduction of a regulator with statutory powers to sanction clubs.
Other recommendations include a new owners' and directors' test to ensure "only good custodians and qualified directors" can run clubs, and greater consultation with fans.
Questions arose during the sale of Chelsea by Russian owner Roman Abramovich, who was targeted by UK sanctions after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Rights group Amnesty also criticised the purchase of Newcastle by a Saudi-backed consortium in October last year, saying it was an attempt to "sportswash" the Gulf kingdom's human rights record.
But since April, there have been two changes of Prime Minister, with Boris Johnson giving way to Liz Truss, who herself led the ruling Conservative adminstration for fewer than 50 days before being replaced by Rishi Sunak, a Southampton supporter, last month.
The political turmoil has led to concerns an administration facing pressing economic issues caused by a cost-of-living crisis and a looming recession will have little time for football governance reform.

AP source: Glazer Joel co owner of Manchester united here to make the decision (finale) about Ronaldo future in the club.
MANCHESTER, England (AP) Manchester United co-owner Joel Glazer will make the final decision about Cristiano Ronaldo's future at the club after the forward's incendiary TV interview, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press.
Ronaldo's position at United is considered untenable after saying he felt ''betrayed'' by the club in an interview set to be broadcast in Britain this week, where he also said he does not respect manager Erik ten Hag.
The interview has been widely viewed as an attempt by Ronaldo to force a move away from United after the World Cup. But Glazer will have the final say on any decision to sell the forward and it will be up to Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes to present potential clubs willing to buy him, the person with knowledge of the situation said. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the issue publicly.
The person also said United's hierarchy has backed Ten Hag's handling of the player and were fully supportive of his decision to cut Ronaldo from the squad and order him to train away from the first team after the Portugal international refused to come on as a substitute against Tottenham last month.
For Sunday's match against Fulham in the Premier League, Ronaldo was left out of United's squad for a second game in a row after the club said he had an unspecified illness. But he trained with Portugal's national team on Monday as it began preparations for the World Cup in Qatar.
There was widespread speculation about Ronaldo leaving United even before the season started, but a potential exit is being complicated by the limited number of clubs that can afford to meet his reported salary of around 500,000 pounds ($590,000) per week.
Sarina Wiegman the England women's boss wishes Southgate the England men's boss a good luck to the world cup
Wiegman guided the England women's team to victory at Euro 2022. It is more than 56 years since the England men's team last won a significant piece of silverware -- the 1966 World Cup.
England's men begin their Qatar campaign against Iran on November 21 as they look to improve on their World Cup semi-final showing of four years ago and an agonising penalty shoot-out loss to Italy in last year's Covid-delayed Euro 2020 final at London's Wembley Stadium.
"We have spoken a little bit -- not very recently, but we have," Wiegman told Sky Sports of her conversations with men's team manager Gareth Southgate.
"I would just like to wish them very good luck," said the Dutchwoman, who played 99 times for the Netherlands and then coached her native country before joining England.
The Premier League only came to a halt for the World Cup on Sunday, leaving Southgate with little time to prepare his squad ahead of their arrival in Qatar.
"It is pretty hard, having players just playing this weekend now going out with such a small time to prepare but, still, they are very good players," said Wiegman.
"I just hope they do really well and they are able to enjoy it too and get through to lots of stages."

Cristian Ronaldo : I felt betrayed by Manchester united
Ronaldo reviewed that ten hag and the less Manchester united betrayed him by walking him out from the pitch.
The interview is set to be broadcast this week on Britain's TalkTV but advance clips were released late Sunday - just hours after United's final game before the World Cup. Ronaldo was left out of the squad for the second match in a row after the club said he had an undisclosed illness, although the Portugal's star latest comments will increase speculation that he has played his final game for the club.
When asked on the program ''Piers Morgan Uncensored'' whether United's hierarchy was trying to force him out of the club, Ronaldo said: ''Yes, not only the coach, but another two or three guys around the club. I felt betrayed.''
When quizzed again if senior club executives were trying to oust him, the 37-year-old Portugal star said: ''I don't care. People should listen to the truth.
''Yes, I felt betrayed and I felt like some people don't want me here, not only this year, but last year too.''
United made no immediate comment.
Ronaldo has been in and out of United's starting lineup this season and refused to come on as a substitute in last month's win over Tottenham. That led to him being banished from the squad for the subsequent trip to Chelsea, although he then returned to the fold.
Ronaldo inflamed the relationship with Ten Hag even further by saying: ''I don't have respect for him because he doesn't show respect for me. If you don't have respect for me, I'm never going have respect for you.''
Ronaldo also claimed United had not progressed as a club since the departure of manager Alex Ferguson in 2013, and criticized the hiring of Ralf Rangnick as interim manager last season after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired.
Liverpool unsuitable defense gave Becker Alison the opportunity to prove he's best keeper for the upcoming world cup
Alisson Becker is illustrating that being overworked is equally effective for proving world-class status, his spectacular form an anomaly in an erratic season for his team. On current form, he is the world's best.
Alisson’s name reverberated around Anfield as the Liverpool World Cup contingent was offered a send-off by the Kop after their victory over Southampton. Alisson's beard may have gone, but the capacity to navigate Jürgen Klopp’s side through hairy moments remains intact.
Liverpool had built a comfortable lead over Nathan Jones’ side, only for Alisson to produce a trio of exceptional saves to ensure his team-mates did not pay for a second half nap.
Samuel Edozie and Mohamed Elyounoussi suffered at the hands of Alisson’s weekly Peter Schmeichel impersonation, the No1 a colossal presence when dashing off his line and so courageous he gives the impression he would throw himself in front of a speeding bullet to protect three points.
Then Che Adams offered a knowing, appreciative glance when Alisson pushed aside a goal-bound header. With a less able keeper, Liverpool would have been the subject of another inquiry into sloppy defending.

Arsenal gain five point as Manchester city loose against Brentford. Newcastle been in the 3rd spot still Christmas as klopp celebrate a victory won for Liverpool. Bournemouth makes their way to home win as Tottenham nearly escape from loosing against Leeds
Arsenal head into the World Cup break five points clear at the top of the Premier League after they beat Wolves 2-0 on Saturday as Manchester City suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat to Brentford.
Newcastle remain in third after inflicting Chelsea's third consecutive league defeat 1-0 at St. James' Park, while Tottenham scored twice in the final 10 minutes to win a 4-3 thriller against Leeds.
City had not lost at the Etihad since February, but were stunned by Ivan Toney's response to being left out of England's World Cup squad.
The Brentford captain headed in his 10th goal of the season to give the Bees an early lead, but City responded before half-time thanks to Phil Foden's sumptuous strike.
Pep Guardiola warned ahead of the game that his side might have one eye on the World Cup with 10 of the City starting XI heading to Qatar.
A lacklustre City performance was punished in the eighth minute of time added on when Brentford cut open Guardiola's men on the counter-attack and Toney tapped in Josh Dasilva's cross.
"The better team won," conceded Guardiola. "We had a lot of problems and we could not press as they didn't allow us."
Thomas Frank hailed the result as perhaps Brentford's best ever as they moved up to 10th in the Premier League.
"Speaking to some people from the club, this is probably the single biggest ever result," said Frank. "Against one of the richest clubs in the world and we have one of the lowest budgets in the division."
Arsenal took full advantage to set up an intriguing title battle when the Premier League returns from a six-week hiatus on Boxing Day.
Martin Odegaard led by example for the Gunners as the Norwegian fired home twice from close range in the second half.
New Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui was in the crowd before officially taking charge on Monday and has work to do in the second half of the season with Wanderers now bottom of the table.
Tottenham once again had to come from behind after goals from the in-form Crysencio Summerville and Rodrigo either side of Harry Kane's equaliser put Leeds in front at half time.
Jesse Marsch's men won 4-3 against Bournemouth last weekend, but were this time on the receiving end of a thrilling comeback.
"I feel like someone has ripped my heart out," said Marsch.
Ben Davies' powerful strike made it 2-2 before Rodrigo restored Leeds' lead.
Tottenham have made a habit of late fightbacks this season and rescued the three points as Rodrigo Bentancur scored twice in the final 10 minutes.
Newcastle bounced back above Spurs into third as Joe Willock's stunning strike extended Chelsea's winless league run to five games.
The Magpies are just two points adrift of City after a run of 22 points from a possible 24.
"I feel immense pride at how the players have performed consistently," said Newcastle boss Eddie Howe. "Now the challenge is to maintain and enhance that."
Liverpool signed off until Boxing Day on a positive note as Darwin Nunez struck twice against Southampton.
Roberto Firmino's header opened the scoring inside six minutes at Anfield, but in Nathan Jones' first game in charge, the Saints responded immediately through Che Adams.
Nunez has been erratic since his 75 million euro ($77 million) signing from Benfica, but the Uruguayan is already up to eight goals in his debut season at Liverpool after two cool finishes before half-time.
Leicester's rise up the table continued but there were fears it could come at a cost for England.
James Maddison's stunning form forced his way into Gareth Southgate's World Cup squad and he opened the scoring with his seventh goal of he season.
The midfielder hobbled off shortly after, but played down the seriousness of the problem.
"Injury isn’t too bad!" Maddison tweeted. "A small problem that was causing a bit of soreness. Can't wait to meet up with the lads Monday."
Harvey Barnes added a second for the Foxes 12 minutes from time to leave West Ham one point above the relegation zone.
Everton are also only a point above the bottom three after a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Bournemouth.

Pep Guardiola: I am yet to renew my contract with the cities, champion of England league
Pep Guardiola admits he can't imagine managing any other club for longer than his golden spell in charge of Manchester City.
Guardiola is in the final year of his contract as City boss and has yet to reveal if he will extend his stay with the Premier League champions.
The 51-year-old was equally coy before eventually renewing his deal twice before in his six years in Manchester.
Guardiola has won nine major trophies, including four Premier League titles, since taking over at City in 2016.
By the end of the season he will have been in charge at City for as long as he was at Barcelona and Bayern Munich combined.
And the Spaniard admits City's Abu Dhabi-based owners have provided the perfect environment for him to thrive in.
"Stay in another place for seven years? No, I don't think so. It is difficult to find what I have here as a manager," Guardiola told reporters on Friday.
"To be a manager for a long time you need to be so supported. The results help a lot, that is undeniable. In this world they sack you, they fire you, we know that.
"But, at big clubs, part of the success of the manager is the chairman, the sporting director especially, the CEOs and all the people here.
"It goes to the media, fans and players. There is stability. This is why I think only in few clubs this can happen."
The upcoming World Cup means the Premier League is going on pause, offering an opportunity for Guardiola to meet with his employers to discuss his future beyond the end of the campaign.
But whether or not that will happen remains unclear, with Guardiola typically guarded.
"I've said many times, I don't talk about that," he said. "Everything is under control, it's perfect, the decision will be made together with the club the moment it has to be made.

Potter,Pep and Klopp reports good intentions in the England players selected for the world cup Qatar 2022
Pep Gaurdiola: I had no worries of the squads England released on Thursday for the world cup.my two players which is England is Kyle and kelvin
Kyle walker and kelvin Philip have been selected.you all saw kelvin at the calouban cup against Chelsea as the midfielders,he plays well despite he was been into a shoulder surgery injury, like wise walker who got his injury on October 2nd an abdominal knee injury which had been surged now
I had my 100 percent support for the Gareth Southgate the boss Coach of England that Philip is well now set but for walkers not yet.So it is an incredible job if he regain from injury.
Graham Potter: it is a fantastic move to get Conor Gallagher and Mason mount for the selected squad for the world cup.i precisely know that sterling, mason have the courage but Gallagher the midfielder who early played his international football in loan for crystal palace before coming back to Chelsea for the long term .
Gallagher a 22 years old boy who is delightful for the upcoming events.
The questions was he is going to play against Newcastle?.
Gallagher who was selected will start for a bench for his promises of making it to the forward with Mason and sterling. Due to the injury James recce got and Ben Chilwell also, against the champions league with zagard he knew he wasn't going to make up for the world cup.
Jurgen klopp: I had confidence that Arnold Trent Alexander will handle the pressure of world cup.
Since the injury of two England right back defender walker and James, Gareth Southgate decided to select Arnold as the right back to play. Gareth gave James the chance if he will still be fit but he disappointed. The boss Coach of England had no other choice than selecting him for the upcoming events.
Gareth Southgate makes his decision by either he called James who had a knees abdominal,by a surgery or Kyle who had littly regaining his self.
Kyle might be fit for the round table of 16 but for James quarter final said the reports.

Conte.boss of Tottenham cautious Kane for the world cup performance
Tottenham manager Antonio Conte said Harry Kane is running on empty just over a week before he leads England into battle at the World Cup.
Conte blamed a lack of other available options for starting Kane in Spurs' 2-0 League Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.
The England captain was replaced on the hour mark, but has now started all of Tottenham's 21 games in all competitions this season.
Conte is currently without Son Heung-min due to a fractured eye socket, while Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski are making their way back from injury.
"He was really, really tired. Yesterday we had a soft training session, really soft and at one point he stopped himself to recover energy," said Conte.
"I repeat he's okay, it's only fatigue, but it is normal because Harry played every game.
"When you have a player like him it is difficult to decide not to play with him."
To make space in the schedule for a first mid-season World Cup, the group stages of European club competitions were squeezed into a two-month period.
By the time Spurs face Leeds on Saturday, they will have played 13 games in 42 days before the World Cup break.
"Harry Kane showed to be a really good man also," added Conte as he thanked his players for not pulling out of games to save themselves for their countries.

Everton humbled by Bournemouth, Brentford shocked in League Cup
Everton's long wait to win a trophy will not end with the League Cup after Frank Lampard's men were well beaten 4-1 by Bournemouth on Tuesday, as Brentford bowed out on penalties to League Two Gillingham.
In the first of two meetings between the clubs in five days, Bournemouth got the better of two much-changed sides as Jamal Lowe, Junior Stanislas, Emiliano Marcondes and Jaidon Anthony struck on the south coast.
Demarai Gray briefly gave the Toffees hope when he reduced the arrears to 2-1 early in the second half.
But Everton have now won just once in their last seven games with the FA Cup their only hope of ending a 28-year drought without silverware.
Brentford suffered the biggest shock of the night despite taking a third-minute lead through England World Cup hopeful Ivan Toney.
The Gills had just one shot on target but made it count when Mikael Mandron headed in an equaliser 15 minutes from time.
Mikkel Damsgaard is going to Qatar with Denmark, but he was the only man to miss in a high-quality shootout as the visitors won 6-5 on penalties.
Leicester continued their upturn in form with a comfortable 3-0 win over fourth-tier Newport County.

Liverpool owner FSG prepared to sell shares in EPL club
The owner of Liverpool confirmed on Monday it was open to selling shares in the club amid speculation it was inviting offers from potential buyers.
Fenway Sports Group said in a statement it remained committed to the club it bought in 2010 and has guided to a new era of success.
When asked by the Associated Press about the potential that Liverpool could be put up for sale, FSG said it would consider new shareholders.
“FSG has frequently received expressions of interest from third parties seeking to become shareholders in Liverpool,” the statement said. "FSG has said before that under the right terms and conditions we would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club.
“FSG remains fully committed to the success of Liverpool, both on and off the pitch.”
Liverpool has under FSG re-established itself as one of the leading clubs in Europe and won its first English league title in 30 years in 2020.
Manager Jurgen Klopp has also helped the club win the Champions League, Club World Cup, FA Cup and League Cup since being hired in 2015.
But he has spoken publicly of the difficulty in challenging Abu Dhabi-backed Manchester City in the transfer market.

Guardiola labels late winner 'the moment' of Man City reign
Pep Guardiola labelled Manchester City's dramatic 2-1 win against Fulham as the finest moment of his remarkable reign at the Etihad Stadium.
City were in danger of dropping points in the Premier League title race after Joao Cancelo was controversially sent off in the first half of Saturday's game.
But Erling Haaland came off the bench to convert a penalty deep into stoppage-time as 10-man City moved one point above Arsenal to the top of the table.
Haaland's winner sparked jubilant celebrations from City boss Guardiola, who claimed the champions' gritty victory ranked as the defining moment of his six years in Manchester.
City have won the Premier League four times in the last five seasons, while also lifting the FA Cup and League Cup under Guardiola.
But the Spaniard felt the character shown by his players against Fulham surpassed everything that had come before.
"Everyone was exceptional for 65 minutes against Fulham, playing the way we played," he said.
"It was the moment of my period here in Manchester so far and, of course, the goal at the end, celebrating with our people - we didn't win the Premier League here today, of course, but this moment makes sense of our job for all us.
"It was so exciting. After seven years, you always have doubts: do people follow you? Are they tired? Are people annoyed in their jobs? Many thousands of millions of meetings, training sessions and travel, but today you say, wow, you see, they are there.
"They still want to do it, they are still alive and they make us so proud. We won because my players are beyond exceptional in all departments."
City had looked comfortable early on and went ahead through Julian Alvarez but the game changed after Cancelo bundled over Harry Wilson to concede a penalty and see red.
Andreas Pereira buried the spot-kick and it required fit-again Haaland to finally end Fulham's stubborn second half resistence.
Guardiola had no complaints about Cancelo's sending off, saying: "He was the last man. It was soft contact but there cannot be contact. It is a red card."

Ever Wonder why Liverpool owes their existence to Everton?
Ever Wonder why Liverpool owe their existence to Everton?
Have you ever wondered how Liverpool Football Club were formed? Well, it’s actually because of their bitter rivals Everton Football Club. Seriously.
After being formed in 1878, Everton played home games around Liverpool with Stanley Park and Priory Road both hosting their matches. However, they moved to a brand new stadium, Anfield, in 1884.
That’s right, the historic home of Liverpool Football Club was home to Everton long before LFC were formed. Mind. Blown.
Everton moved to Anfield because they were kicked out of their previous home due to rowdy scenes in a cup win, as they rented the stadium from local brewers, the Orrell Brothers, who then donated it to the local Stanley Hospital.
Injured Chilwell to miss England's World Cup campaign
Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell will miss England's World Cup campaign after suffering a "significant" hamstring injury.
Chilwell limped off during Chelsea's Champions League group stage victory against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old left-back went for scans on his injury and Chelsea confirmed on Saturday that he will not be fit in time for the World Cup, which starts in Qatar on November 20.
"Following the injury sustained in our recent game against Dinamo Zagreb, Ben has undergone a scan on his hamstring," the Chelsea statement said.
"Results show that Ben has suffered a significant injury and the defender is unfortunately expected to miss the World Cup.
"Ben will now begin a rehabilitation programme with the club's medical department."
Chilwell has made 17 England appearances and was expected to compete with Luke Shaw for the starting left-back role in Gareth Southgate's Three Lions team.
He was part of the England squad that finished as European Championship runners-up in 2021, although he did not make an appearance during the tournament.
Chilwell has returned to his best form this season after recovering from a ruptured cruciate ligament in November last year that ruled him out until May.
"Following my ACL injury I worked so hard to make sure I was ready for the World Cup. It has always been a dream of mine. Unfortunately, this won't be possible following my scan results. I'll do all I can to get back playing for Chelsea ASAP. Thanks for the messages of support," Chilwell wrote on Twitter.
Southgate is due to name England's World Cup squad on Thursday, with their first group match coming against Iran on November 21.
Chilwell's injury is the latest blow for both Chelsea and England, with Blues right-back Reece James facing a race against time to prove his fitness after suffering a knee injury.
Southgate also has injury concerns over Manchester City right-back Kyle Walker, who has had groin surgery, while City midfielder Kalvin Phillips has hardly played this season after dislocating his shoulder.

Newcastle wanted 'help' when I arrived, says Howe
Eddie Howe revealed on Friday that he walked into a Newcastle dressing room that "wanted help" when he launched his rescue mission as he prepares to mark 12 months in charge at St James' Park.
Howe, who took over as manager from Steve Bruce on November 8 last year, has lifted the club from the Premier League relegation mire to a position as unlikely top-four contenders ahead of Sunday's trip to Southampton.
He said the struggling squad he inherited, since boosted by big-money signings, was better than it was given credit for.
"I had that belief internally that we'd got some really good players," said the former Bournemouth boss. "I think my first impressions were genuine, a really willing group that wanted to be coached, that wanted help, so I felt that was a really good starting point."
Defender Fabian Schaer and midfielder Joelinton, who were already on the books at the club, are among those to have played big roles in Newcastle's revival.
But 28-year-old Paraguay international Miguel Almiron, who has scored six goals in his past six games, has really caught the eye.
"We don't expect Miggy to be scoring -- we'd love him to -- but we don't expect him to be scoring shots from 25, 30 yards every week. It's an unrealistic expectation," said Howe, 44.
"We're delighted with the ones he has scored and, if you put them together, which a lot of people have, you end up with a showreel of outstanding goals, really high technical delivery.
"But I get just as much pleasure from seeing his second goal against Fulham, a tap-in in the six-yard box from Joe Willock's cross. They're the goals that you'd love our players to be able to deliver every week."

AC Milan, Leipzig take final last-16 places as PSG lose top spot
AC Milan reached the Champions League knock-out stage for the first time in nine years on Wednesday with a 4-0 victory over Salzburg, while RB Leipzig also qualified by thrashing Shakhtar Donetsk.
Paris Saint-Germain will be the team group winners want to avoid in Monday's last-16 draw after missing out on top spot in Group H despite a 2-1 win at Juventus, as Benfica hammered Maccabi Haifa 6-1 to snatch first place on total away goals.
Seven-time European champions Milan knew a point would be enough to send them into the last 16 for the first time since the 2013-14 season after a group-stage exit last term.
"These kinds of nights is what we wish for," Milan coach Stefano Pioli told Sky Sport.
"We wanted to show we improved compared to last season in the Champions League. We're ambitious now, so let's see what happens next."
Pioli's side eased any nerves at the San Siro inside 14 minutes as Olivier Giroud headed home.
Milan's return to the knockouts was all but confirmed less than a minute after half-time when Giroud headed the ball across goal for Rade Krunic to nod past Philipp Kohn in the Salzburg goal.
Giroud added his second before the hour mark, allowing the home fans the opportunity to celebrate for the remainder of the match and Junior Messias added further gloss to the scoreline in added time.
Milan qualified from Group E in second place behind Chelsea, who came from behind to beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 at Stamford Bridge with goals from Raheem Sterling and debutant Denis Zakaria.
Leipzig also only needed to avoid defeat to go through against Ukrainians Shakhtar in Warsaw.
Shakhtar, playing their home matches in Poland and having seen most of their foreign players leave due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, had stunned Leipzig 4-1 in their Group F opener.
South Korea's Son to have facial surgery, putting World Cup in doubt
Tottenham on Wednesday said forward Son Heung-min will undergo surgery on a fracture around his left eye, putting the South Korean star's World Cup at risk.
Son was forced off during the first half of Spurs' 2-1 win over Marseille on Tuesday that secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.
"We can confirm that Heung-Min Son will undergo surgery to stabilise a fracture around his left eye," Tottenham said in a statement.
"Following surgery, Son will commence rehabilitation with our medical staff and we shall update supporters further in due course."
The Premier League club gave no date for his return, but he faces a race against time to be fit for South Korea's opening match of the World Cup against Uruguay on November 24.
Son is his country's captain and a national icon thanks to his exploits for both club and country.
The 30-year-old has scored 35 goals in 106 international appearances and won gold at the Asian Games in 2018, a medal which secured him an exemption from national service.
South Korea also face Portugal and Ghana in Group H.
Son seems certain to miss Tottenham's Premier League clash with Liverpool on Sunday.
Antonio Conte's men also face Nottingham Forest in the League Cup and Leeds before club football breaks for the World Cup.
Kennedy World Cup injury 'a big loss' for Canada says Herdman
Canada coach John Herdman says the absence of defender Scott Kennedy for the World Cup due to a shoulder injury is a "big loss" to his team.
The 25-year-old central defender picked up the injury playing in Germany on Saturday for his second division club, Jahn Regensburg.
Herdman told reporters on a conference call on Wednesday that he had spoken to the Calgary-born player and that there was no way he could be fit in time for this month's tournament in Qatar.
"We looked at every angle of trying to bring him into this World Cup squad and getting him back. But with that type of injury there is just no way back for Scott unfortunately. He was devastated and he is going to be a big loss," said Herdman.
"It has been tough. We had a conversation with him, myself and the medical team and he is just sitting in Germany in pain at the moment with that shoulder."
Kennedy would likely have made the 26-man squad as the main back-up central defender but Herdman said his absence would be felt in other ways.
"For anyone who knows Scott, he is just a good man, a good human being in the environment. He has great character, always seems to contribute in a quiet way and very, very reliable on the field," said the Englishman.
"So he will be a big loss to this group on and off the field. Just one of those tough moments as a coach when you have got to share that grim reality with someone. Never easy," he said.
Herdman, who will take a squad of Canadians from Major League Soccer clubs for a week-long camp in Bahrain concluding with a friendly on November 11, conceded that he is confronting the fear of injuries every time he watches his players in action in Europe.
"Every game we are monitoring you have just got that pit in your stomach, that you are going to lose a critical player," he said.
"But I think it is going to happen, these things happen, losing Scott Kennedy was awful. You know what is coming in the conversations you have got to have with the player and its tough."
Leipzig thrash Shakhtar to reach knockout stage
RB Leipzig cruised to a 4-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk to book their place in the Champions League knockout stage on Wednesday as Germany striker Timo Werner was forced off injured.
Leipzig smashed in three quickfire second-half goals in Warsaw to secure second place behind Real Madrid in Group F and crush the Ukrainian club's dreams of a fairytale berth in the last 16.
"I'm really proud of the team. We didn't start well in this Champions League campaign, but we put in a solid performance today and are really happy to be through," forward Emil Forsberg told DAZN.
There was a bittersweet note to Leipzig's success, however, after Werner was substituted off early in a potential blow to his World Cup hopes.
The former Chelsea forward was replaced by Forsberg after picking up a knock to his ankle in a clash with Shakhtar captain Taras Stepanenko.
Leipzig started more brightly than their opponents and were rewarded with an early goal, Christopher Nkunku pouncing on the rebound after Werner had forced a save from Anatoliy Trubin.
Shakhtar's hopes of launching a comeback were dashed when Andre Silva bundled in a second from close range just after half-time.
The Ukrainian side thought they had a penalty a few minutes later after a tackle on Lassina Traore, but VAR showed the Burkinabe had drifted offside earlier in the move.
Dominik Szoboszlai rounded Trubin to slide the ball in for Leipzig's third just after the hour mark, before Dani Olmo came off the bench to help complete the rout.
The Spain international curled the ball in off the post just seconds after taking to the field, though the goal was later ruled to be an own goal due to a deflection off Valeriy Bondar.
Leipzig join fellow Bundesliga clubs Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt in the last 16.
Shakhtar, meanwhile, drop down to the Europa League after finishing third in Group F.
Chris Wondolowski, a ‘surreal’ life, and the pivotal World Cup miss that still haunts him
Chris Wondolowski knows that the flashbacks are coming. They barge to the front of his brain whenever he hears the word “Belgium,” or whenever a pitiless fan reminds him of his shame. They recede as he shuttles two young daughters around his hometown, or beams at their school’s Halloween costume parade; but there are “certain triggers,” Wondo says, that “send your mind off spinning.” And he knows that, as the U.S. men’s national team returns to the World Cup for the first time since his miss, the triggers will multiply.
They’ve trailed him ever since July 1, 2014, when he shanked a chance now burned into YouTube and millions of brains. In stoppage time of a taut Round of 16 tie, he blazed the crowning moment of an improbable career beyond a Belgian crossbar, and America howled in disbelief, then in rage. An hour later, sitting in a despondent locker room, Wondolowski glued his eyes to Twitter and ingested bottomless venom. Before he could even speak to his family, he faced a gaggle of reporters and, when asked about the chance, admitted that he’d “be thinking about it” indefinitely.
Eight years later, he still is. He’s 39 and recently retired, as Major League Soccer’s goalscoring king. He lives a busy but happy life in leafy Northern California, coaching and dadding surrounded by people he loves. But memories of 2014 rest delicately just beneath the surface of his mind. Some of them are fond; but the miss, Wondolowski told Yahoo Sports this summer, “definitely overshadows all the good, or any of the good.” So much so that he shies away from some World Cup-related conversations, “’cause I don't want someone to bring it up — I don't want to go down that road,” he says.
But of course, reminders are inescapable. His mentions are still occasionally polluted by “absolute clowns,” who promise to always hate him and never forgive him. “And it's not even just the social media,” Wondolowski says. “It's everywhere.” A replay blindsided him when he sat down to watch the 2014 World Cup final. He knows more will ambush him when he tunes in for Qatar 2022 in November.
