FRANK LAMPARD - I WANTED TO SIGN MANCHESTER CITY FORWARD ERLING HAALAND WHEN I WAS MANAGER AT CHELSEA

Chelsea signed Timo Werner in 2020 as part of a big-spending transfer window to reward Frank Lampard for securing Champions League football for the club, and the German failed to make a serious impact. Lampard lost his job later that season and on Friday he revealed that he had wanted to sign Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, then at RB Salzburg.

Everton manager Frank Lampard has revealed that he wanted to sign Erling Haaland when he was at Chelsea.
Lampard managed at Stamford Bridge between the summer of 2019 and January 2021, after securing Champions League football in his first season with the club under a transfer embargo.

The restriction was lifted for the following summer and while Lampard may have attempted to sign Haaland, then at RB Salzburg, he ultimately switched to Borussia Dortmund, before moving to Manchester City where he became the quickest player to score 20 goals in the Premier League, needing just 14 appearances.

JURGEN KLOPP SAYS SECURING CODY GAKPO DEAL BEFORE JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW OPENS IS 'HOME RUN' FOR LIVERPOOL

Cody Gakpo has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract at Anfield, leaving PSV Eindhoven after 15 years with the Dutch club, where he progressed from the youth academy. Liverpool saw off competition from other major European clubs to land Gakpo's signature, with Manchester United known to have been interested in securing his services. Jurgen Klopp thinks it's a "home run" move.

Jurgen Klopp says he did not need Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk to work as a scout to lure Cody Gakpo to Anfield, as the door was already “wide open”.
The Dutch winger is moving to the Premier League from PSV Eindhoven after signing a five-and-a-half-year contract on Merseyside

After seeing off competition from other clubs including rivals Manchester United, Liverpool struck a deal reportedly worth £37m, which could rise up to £45m with potential add-ons.

ERIK TEN HAG DECLARES 'EMERGENCY' AS ILLNESS RIPS THROUGH MAN UTD BEFORE FOREST GAME, WITH LUKE SHAW AT CENTRE-BACK

Manchester United were unable to start Harry Maguire, Scott McTominay and Victor Lindelof against Nottingham Forest, and Lisandro Martinez was absent after his World Cup exploits. That meant that Erik ten Hag picked a central defensive pairing of Luke Shaw and Raphael Varane, and ahead of the game manager Erik ten Hag said that the situation was "an emergency".

Illnesses in the Manchester United squad led to an “emergency” for Erik ten Hag as he picked Luke Shaw and Raphael Varane as centre-backs against Nottingham Forest.
Shaw, traditionally a left-back or left wing-back, will have to learn to play through the middle on Tuesday night at Old Trafford in the first game back in the Premier League since the World Cup for United.

Alongside him is Varane, who just nine days ago was playing in the World Cup final as France lost to Argentina.

NEWCASTLE UNITED CLIMB TO SECOND AND BRIGHTON EARN SOUTH COAST BRAGGING RIGHTS IN BOXING DAY PREMIER LEAGUE THUMPINGS

Miguel Almiron’s impressive Premier League goal-scoring form continued as he netted in Newcastle United’s 3-0 win on the road against Leicester City to send the Magpies into second place, while Brighton & Hove Albion also recorded a victory against Southampton. Nine-man Crystal Palace were well beaten at home to Fulham, and Wolves earned a vital last-gasp win at Goodison Park against Everton.

Miguel Almiron scored his ninth goal of the season in Newcastle United’s resounding 3-0 win over a bleak-looking Leicester City side at King Power Stadium to propel the Magpies to second in the table.
Despite having played twice more, the win for Eddie Howe’s side takes them above Manchester City into second, and four points behind leaders Arsenal

Chris Wood and Joelinton were also on the scoresheet alongside standout man Almiron, as the Toon Army enjoyed an electric restart to the Premier League season.

CHELSEA'S N'GOLO KANTE SET TO JOIN CRISTIANO RONALDO AT AL NASSR ON FREE TRANSFER

N'Golo Kante is out of contract at the end of the season and could join Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. Elsewhere, Real Madrid are reluctant to chase Kylian Mbappe again after last summer, while Tottenham are one of three sides keen on Alexis Mac Allister. Chelsea are believed to be favourites to sign West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.

Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to sign a huge contract to move to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia after leaving Manchester United, and the Mirror believe that he could be joined by Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante. The 31-year-old French international is out of contract at the end of the season and could move on a free transfer in search of a new challenge despite wanting to stay in London.

CHELSEA BOSS GRAHAM POTTER CONFIRMS N'GOLO KANTE OUT FOR AT LEAST TWO MORE MONTHS FOLLOWING HAMSTRING SURGERY

"Graham Potter gave the update on N’Golo Kante in his pre-match press conference, as Chelsea prepare to host Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on December 27. Kante is not expected to return to action until the end of February at the earliest. The Frenchman is currently joined by an extensive list of absentees, which includes: Armando Broja, Wesley Fofana, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ben Chilwell."

Graham Potter has revealed that N’Golo Kane will be out for at least another two months following hamstring surgery.
Kante missed the World Cup in Qatar as a consequence of the injury, and the Chelsea head coach explained that the Frenchman is still some way off from making a return.

Continuing to be denied Kante's services is no doubt a blow to Potter, especially given the growing list of injury absentees at Stamford Bridge.

LIVERPOOL BOSS JURGEN KLOPP HITS OUT AT 'COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY' GOALS CONCEDED AGAINST MANCHESTER CITY IN CARABAO CUP

"Liverpool and Manchester City met once again to continue their rivalry, this time in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup. Speaking after the game, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said his side had to deal with last-minute formation changes, criticised his team\u0027s defending, and said that with VAR technology available it should have been used for the game."

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said the three goals his side conceded against Manchester City in their 3:2 defeat were "completely unnecessary."
City were ahead after 10 minutes when Erling Haaland - perhaps the most famous player to have sat out the Qatar World Cup, due to Norway’s failure to qualify for the tournament - made the most of a month’s rest with the opening goal.

Liverpool’s young signing from Fulham, Fabio Carvalho, levelled after 20 minutes, and a frenetic 10 minute period in the second half settled the tie.

ERIK TEN HAG ON STATE OF MAN UTD AHEAD OF DOMESTIC FOOTBALL RETURN - ‘WE’RE FAR AWAY FROM WHERE WE NEED TO BE’

"Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says the club are “far away” from where they need to be after a mixed start to his managerial tenure Old Trafford. Ten Hag says he knew he was taking on a “difficult project” after United statistically had their worst season since the start of the Premier League in 1992. They currently sit fifth in the league and are in League Cup action on Wednesday."

Erik ten Hag has admitted Manchester United are “far away” from where they need to be as he prepares for the return of domestic football.
United had a shocking start to life under Ten Hag with back-to-back losses in the Premier League, including a 4-0 defeat to Brentford.

Problems with Cristiano Ronaldo marred the club before the World Cup but United recovered to sit in fifth place ahead of the resumption of the Premier League

LEAGUE CUPNEWCASTLE UNITED BEAT BOURNEMOUTH IN LEAGUE CUP, SOUTHAMPTON, WOLVES AND LEICESTER THROUGH TO QUARTER-FINALS

"Newcastle United needed an own goal from Bournemouth\u0027s Adam Smith to reach the quarter-finals of the League Cup as English top-flight teams returned to action after the World Cup. There were also wins for three other Premier League sides in the last 16, with victories for Southampton, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City on Tuesday night."

Newcastle beat Bournemouth to reach the League Cup quarter-finals, with Southampton, Wolves and Leicester City also qualifying.
Eddie Howe named a strong line-up for the first match since the end of the World Cup with England internationals Callum Wilson, Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier all in the starting XI.

There was a place for the in-form Miguel Almiron on the right wing, too.

WHERE WERE WE? HOW WE STAND IN EUROPE’S TOP FIVE LEAGUES AHEAD OF RESUMPTION AFTER 2022 WORLD CUP

"With the 2022 World Cup over we now can return our focus to the wonderful world of club football. But wait, it\u0027s been over a month since you probably saw your team play? Can you remember how they were doing? Wait, are Barcelona really top of La Liga? And who\u0027s that challenging PSG and Bayern Munich? Let\u0027s recap everything that has happened thus far shall we?"

Well that utterly bizarre interruption (congratulations to Argentina!) is finally over and now we can get back to the good stuff.
Yes that’s right, club football is mere days away after the players have the shortest of breaks (depending on the league) you could imagine after a long tournament and they have to go again for the next five months.

But after so long without club football there’s a chance you may have forgotten where we stand across Europe.

LIONEL MESSI AND ARGENTINA WIN ASTONISHING WORLD CUP FINAL, THE WORLD REACTS - 'GLORIOUS, TRULY GLORIOUS'

It was one of the most astonishing World Cup finals of all time, with the 'desert duel' between Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe living up to all expectations - and more - as they shared five goals between them, with Argentina and Messi coming out the victors after the drama of penalties. Here we look at how the world reacted to the Qatar 2022 finale

One of the all-time great World Cup finals - quite possibly the greatest - has gone to Argentina.
No one could've written the script for what happened, with the Albiceleste 2-0 up and cruising with 10 minutes to go, before France came roaring back out to level it up at 2-2 - with both goals from Kylian Mbappe - and take the game to extra time.

Then more drama, as Lionel Messi got his second of the night to put Argentina 3-2 ahead, but Mbappe got his hat-trick with minutes left to take the encounter to penalties.

CROATIA MIDFIELDER LUKA MODRIC WANTS TO COMPETE AT NATIONS LEAGUE AND WILL 'THINK ABOUT EURO 2024'

Many had assumed that Luka Modric would call time on his international career after the conclusion of Croatia's campaign at the 2022 Qatar World Cup. However after winning the third-place play-off against Morocco on Saturday, Modric said he hoped to play on until the Nations League next season, and he might even consider staying on with Croatia until the European Championships in 2024.

Croatia captain Luka Modric intends to keep playing for his country, at least until next summer’s Nations League final.
The UEFA tournament will be held in June next year, and Modric has not signalled his intention to definitively retire immediately after that competition. Modric even suggested that he might want to stay with his country until 2024, when the European Championships are held in Germany.

There had been speculation that 37-year-old Modric could call time on his international career after playing the third-place play-off against Morocco in Qatar on Saturday.

'OUR TEAM WILL WIN’: HOW SO MANY INDIANS STARTED SUPPORTING ARGENTINA

Better known for its love of cricket, every four years India and the wider region are gripped by World Cup fever

In one village, dozens of houses have been painted white and blue. In another, vast 10-metre statues of football star Lionel Messi have been erected in rivers and along roadsides. But this is not Argentina proudly supporting their national team ahead of Sunday’s World Cup final, where Argentina will face France, but instead is India’s southernmost state of Kerala.

India, and the south Asia region, is known more for its love of cricket and the countries have never participated in major international football tournaments. But every four years, in corners of India and across Bangladesh, football fever comes alive with the arrival of the World Cup. Without their own national squads to support, fans instead have developed decades-long allegiances to other teams; none more so than an enduring love for Argentina, the team of football icons Messi and Maradona.

REAL MADRID PREPARE BID FOR MANCHESTER UNITED TRANSFER TARGET CODY GAKPO, ARSENAL FACE COMPETITION FOR MYKHAYLO MUDRYK

Real Madrid are ready to swoop in and steal Manchester United\u0027s top transfer target, Cody Gakpo, in the January window. Elsewhere, Arsenal face fierce competition for Shakhtar Donetsk\u0027s £85 million-rated winger Mykhaylo Mudryk, Chelsea are closing in on signing David Datro Fofana from Molde and Barcelona have been offered the chance to sign Adrien Rabiot as a free agent next summer."

Premier League duo Manchester United and Newcastle United have been rocked in their pursuit of Netherlands’ breakout World Cup star Cody Gakpo. The Mirror report that Real Madrid have joined the race to sign the highly-rated 23-year-old. Manchester United contemplated signing Gakpo last summer, before buying Antony from Ajax, but they have now reignited their interest in the PSV Eindhoven forward after Cristiano Ronaldo departed Old Trafford. Real Madrid are reportedly “preparing a bid” for the youngster and PSV are ready to demand a “record fee” in January.

FERNANDO SANTOS SACKED BY PORTUGAL AFTER WORLD CUP EXIT AND CONTROVERSIAL CRISTIANO RONALDO AXE

Fernando Santos has left Portugal after he failed to guide his country beyond the quarter-finals at the 2022 World Cup. Santos still departs a legend, having overseen their historic triumph at Euro 2016 – Portugal’s only major trophy to date. Portugal lit up the early stages in Qatar with some attacking football, but fell to tournament dark horses Morocco in the last eight.

Portugal have sacked manager Fernando Santos after they failed to progress beyond the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals.
Santos made headlines after dropping superstar Cristiano Ronaldo for the last 16 match with Switzerland, but his decision proved inspired as replacement Goncalo Ramos bagged a hat-trick in the 6-1 win.

But Portugal were undone in the last eight by stubborn Morocco, who defended valiantly for a 1-0 win to become the first African side in history to reach the World Cup semi-finals.

LIONEL MESSI WILL BE ‘LICKING HIS LIPS’ AT THE PROSPECT OF PLAYING FRANCE IN 2022 WORLD CUP FINAL, SAYS RIO FERDINAND

Rio Ferdinand has predicted Lionel Messi and Argentina will be “licking their lips” at the prospect of playing France in the 2022 World Cup final on Sunday. An early goal from Theo Hernandez and an effort from Randal Muani off the bench was enough for Les Bleus to beat Morocco, but not without the African side causing the holders problems. The final takes place on December 18.

France saw off a heroic Morocco on Wednesday night to set up a mouth-watering tie with Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final on Sunday.
Former England defender Rio Ferdinand believes Lionel Messi and his team-mates will be relishing the thought of playing the current holders.

Theo Hernandez was the first opposition player to score against Morocco in Qatar when he broke the deadlock in the fifth minute of the semi-final, with Randal Muani coming off the bench in the second half to double the lead with his first touch.

Didier Deschamps’ world champions took the lead on 17 minutes through Aurelien Tchouameni’s 25-yard strike

England felt there had been a foul in the build up and were also frustrated when VAR failed to support their appeal for a penalty following what looked like a foul on Kane just before the break.

ROY KEANE: ENGLAND YOUNGSTERS WON’T FEAR FRANCE AT WORLD CUP, JUDE BELLINGHAM PRODUCED BEST MIDFIELD SHOWING IN YEARS

Bukayo Saka scored and Jude Bellingham put on a five-star performance as England romped to a 3-0 World Cup last-16 win over Senegal to set up a quarter-final clash with defending champions France. After another outstanding performance, Roy Keane predicts Gareth Southgate’s young players won’t fear Kylian Mbappe and Co. “Will they be fearful of France? Absolutely not. Go and take them on,” he said.

Roy Keane doesn’t think England’s Young Lions will be fearful of World Cup defending champions France, as Gareth Southgate’s side prepare to take on Les Bleus in the quarter-final.
England eventually swept Senegal aside after a slow start thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and 21-year-old Bukayo Saka.

Phil Foden, 22, had his part to play in all three goals, and Jude Bellingham, 19, put in a memorable performance orchestrating the game from midfield - a performance Roy Keane “hasn’t seen for years” from an England midfielder.

WE'RE ALL EXCITED TO WATCH ONE MORE POLAND GAME AT THE WORLD CUP AFTER ARGENTINA LOSS, RIGHT? - THE WARM-UP

"Argentina have sorted themselves out, and Poland have scraped through in second. One of these occurrences is a lot more exciting than the other. Elsewhere, Denmark made a lot of pre-tournament predictions look very silly indeed as they crashed out against Australia. And France lost to Tunisia but are trying to have the result changed on a technicality. All VAR\u0027s fault. Football!"

In the end, Poland managed not to kick anybody too hard, and Saudi Arabia's late consolation goal sealed the deal. We would not see Group C decided by the drawing of lots. Instead we've ended up with something much more depressing: another game for Poland.
Perhaps that's a little unfair. Perhaps it's a hard line to walk, to go into a game knowing that defeat will be fine as long as it's not too spectacular, and that the other game is the really important one. It's hard enough to keep track of Lionel Messi when you don't have anything else to worry about. And Argentina, particularly in the second half, started to look a bit like the team they've been in the last few years.
But on the other hand, Poland were dreadful. Unambitious to the point of invisibility; shaky to the point of near-implosion. Perhaps it was all a galaxy-brained plan to protect that fair play record by barely getting close enough to commit any fouls. Or perhaps a gesture of kindness to Wojciech Szczęsny: he must be worried about the situation at Juventus. Let's see if we can take his mind off things.
This isn't just the Warm-Up being mean for meanness' sake. This is a genuine concern. By virtue of finishing second in the group, Poland head into the last 16 to play France, in what scientists are already predicting could be 'the worst game of football of all time'. The solitary confinement of Robert Lewandowski against Didier Deschamps' punishmentball. We give Poland as much chance of actually beating France as we would Mexico or Saudi Arabia, but we know which games we'd rather watch.
But Argentina are fun now, so that's some nice news. Messi is slowly coming to the boil, and the runners around him kept Poland on edge. As is traditional, Messi's greatest enemy remains the penalty spot, that fatal moment when the game becomes just too easy. It's more or less a character quirk by this point, like Poirot's moustache, and it's just a good job penalties are never important in this competition. (It's worth reading Ken Early on this.)
Argentina's greatest enemy, perhaps, is the schedule. Both they and their next opponents Australia have a brutal turnaround ahead of them: two days and change. After the game, Lionel Scaloni called it "crazy", and said it was really harshing his buzz. "Today we are happy but not euphoric … It's almost 1am, tomorrow is Thursday. We could have had more rest." He didn't add "If only we'd beaten Saudi Arabia, we could have rotated here, but could we make things easy on ourselves? No we could not. We're our own worst enemies. Clowns, the lot of us, and me the clowniest of them all." But we all knew what he meant
